How do I Properly Use RTV Blue Silicone Sealant?
Date:2014-01-07read:3862

Blue room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant is a one-component silicon for making permanent gaskets, often in vehicles. The formula is a low volatile organic compound (VOC), with low odor that nevertheless requires the use of a mask upon application. RTV blue sealant is available in many brands to seal areas that require high heat intensity and repel both water and oil.

Instructions

1.Clean both sides of the surface area for the gasket. Scrape them with a metal scraper at a 45-degree angle to the surface to remove all old gaskets and gasket sealers.

2.Spray a liberal amount of brake cleaner on both gasket surfaces.

3.Wipe each surface clean with a shop towel, and let it dry completely.

4.Cut the plastic applicator nozzle with scissors at an angle to achieve a 1/8-inch hole in the end.

5.Puncture the seal on the RTV silicon tube with a nail. Screw the nozzle on the tube clockwise until it becomes tight.

6.Place the nozzle on the area for sealant, then squeeze it to apply the sealant around the perimeter of the area.

7.Squeeze the sealant around the interior half of each bolthole.

8.Apply sealant in the same manner to both sides that will mate over the silicon gasket.

9.Place the two parts together, insert the bolts and hand tighten them until excess sealant seeps out of the junction.

10.Let the silicon harden by sitting for two hours, then tighten the bolts completely.

11.Wait 24 hours before using the vehicle or item for the best results in a permanent seal.
